Since bacteria can grow at temperatures that are above 8C and below 63C your fridge is the best place to ensure that the defrosting bird does not enter this danger zone.
That gives you the temperature difference you want at the end of roasting 150 degrees in.
This fact rules out defrosting a turkey at room temperature. Uncooked meat or poultry including frozen shouldnt be left at room temperature for more than two hours. Its fine to bring the bird partway to room temperature before roasting. Always keep this in mind regardless.
